One type of ice fishing gear that has stayed relatively the same is ice fishing reels. While you may find newer models are smoother, with the addition of more ball bearings and anti-slipping, the biggest decision you'll have to make on which ice reel to buy is based on the type of species you plan on fishing.
For smaller species of fish such as panfish, you can go with smaller models that'll allow 1-4 lb. test. For larger species, you'll want ice fishing reels that can handle up to 10 lb. test if you're fishing for species such as northerns. But as is the general rule of ice fishing, the lighter you can go, the better and more fun you'll have with the fish. And as inexpensive as ice fishing reels are these days, you won't break the bank on your decision. |
